Why Do I DJ?
Why do I DJ?
I ask myself that question often.
Is it for the fun of it and the parties? On the surface it might seem that way, but no, that’s not really me. And the late nights are draining.
Is it for a creative outlet? For sure - we all need that - but, what happens when I’m not feeling creative?
Is it for an extra source of income? No chance - half the gigs I play don’t even pay me despite me running up their bar tab and selling their tickets.
Is it for the attention? Every DJ likes that - but attention isn’t enough to justify all the work that we put into it.
So why then?
One of the biggest compliments I’ve ever received after a set was you made me feel something. Isn’t that what people want? To feel something?
And isn’t that what music does? Bring us joy and dancing, pain and healing, emotions that we can’t communicate in any other way?
People will spend a lifetime trying to chase a feeling. Maybe it’s something you had once, and lost forever. A time when you were happier or moments you shared with a loved one.
Maybe it was a single night, or a single moment, where you felt fireworks, and it was better than any you’ve ever had, and you’re just trying to get that back. To recreate something you once felt, and haven’t since.
But at the end of the day, feelings aren’t enough. They exist one moment, and they’re gone the next, and before you know it, maybe they’re back, or maybe they’re not.
It needs to be for more. A love for the music.
A love for the people that listen to it. A community.
A commitment, to use a gift, that I believe I have.
Because that’s what love is, it’s more than a feeling.
